Jesus did not instruct us to seek the day or the hour, but He did instruct us to watch the signs of the times. He even gave rebuke to those who will not watch. He also did say we will know the generation (Matt 24). I believe there are many signs pointing to Him returning to people who are alive today.
1Tim 4:1 Now the Spirit expressly says, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron.
Paul gave a strong qualification to this truth: Paul said the Spirit says ‘expressly.’ The Spirit is very clear and emphatic on the importance of this issue. Demons will inspire much doctrine and speakers and ideas that will deny Jesus and seduce people away from Christian faith, and into sin. Many will lose their salvation and depart from the faith. A seared conscience is a conscience that has resisted the leadership of the Holy Spirit to the point that they cannot percieve His conviction, and do not repent of evil.
Spirit of Truth
13 The Spirit of truth…will guide you into all truth…He will tell you things to come. 14 He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you. (Jn. 16:13-14)
In the End-Times there will be a battle for the truth about Jesus. The Holy Spirit was sent to glorify and exalt Jesus by guiding us into all truth about Him. Truth is a gift of God. He doesn’t overtake us and do this, rather we must ask, seek and knock on Scripture, asking for revelation like Paul prayed in Eph 1:17. Fasting, singing the Word, and waiting on the Spirit, accelerate this process.
John is talking here about the ministry of the Holy Spirit. He will take the things that are true about Jesus, and reveal them to you. This is a massive statement.
The conflict in the End-Times will center around defining who Jesus is and how we love Him. We must love God on His terms. Love for God is loyalty to His truth as seen in Jesus. Our love must be expressed in alliance with the Jesus of the Bible, not the Jesus of humanist sentiment.
Three offensive truths about Jesus include, first, His deity thus His right to establish absolute standards for which the nations are accountable to Him for. Jesus is NOT tolerant and accepting of everyone’s view of righteousness and love. Second, the only way of salvation is through Jesus. Third, that He possesses the wisdom and love to judge sin in time and eternity.
22 Consider the goodness and severity of God: on those who fell, severity; but toward you, goodness, if you continue in His goodness. Otherwise you also will be cut off. (Rom. 11:22)
Lovers of Truth
7 The mystery of lawlessness is already at work…9 The coming of the lawless one (Antichrist) is according to the working of Satan, with all power, signs, and lying wonders, 10 and with all unrighteous deception…because they did not receive the love of the truth… (2 Thes. 2:7-10)
Love for the truth is more than adherence to it. It takes a firm stand, regardless of the cost. Loving truth requires that I commit to accept any new ideas as long as they are substantiated in the Scripture regardless of how different they are from my religious background. For example, many have allegiance to their church’s rapture stance, yet haven’t asked the Lord and sought to hear from Him about this issue, taking the Scriptures to Him. The Lord wants us to become lovers of the truth, to be those that recieve the love of the truth.
Renewing our minds helps in this. Feeding our hearts on the truth of the new Creation we are in Christ. Renewing our minds on our identity as born again lovers of God, who are loved by God. We will not love others more than we feed our hearts on the love of God. We will have zeal to proclaim the nature of Christ to the degree we feed our hearts on the gospel. We must cry out for the Spirit, and knock on the doors of the Word, asking the Holy Spirit to breathe on the truths therein, giving spiritual revelation to our inner man.
