Heb12:5-6, “My son, do not despise the chastening of the LORD, nor be discouraged when you are rebuked by Him; For whom the Lord loves He chastens, And scourges every son whom He receives.” It says to not despise the discipline of the Lord, meaning do not just disregard it as nothing, but also do not give up under the discipline of the Lord and lose heart. We are to continue to seek the One we love because the discipline is temporary. The Lord only releases discipline in order to reverse it, and in order to establish us in a new depth of obedience to the Holy Spirit’s leadership in our life.
It says in Isaiah 64:7, “There is no one who calls upon Your name.” He was looking around the nation of Israel, and He was troubled. He says, “No one is stirring himself up to take hold of God. He says, For God, You have hidden Your face from them.” Sometimes He hides His face from us to draw us closer. because He is trying to get our attention—not because He is angry at us. It is all because of His passion for us. But what happens is many get used to just living with a dull spirit. What we do with our eyes, our lack of servant-hood, our pride, our words and our complaining, 1 Thes 5:19: the Spirit is quenched. We lose the presence. We don’t want to ever settle for living with a dull spirit because God has much more for us. He is only withholding His presence to get us to become aware of the areas in our life that the Holy Spirit is jealous about bringing His leadership over. The Spirit of the Lord wants to lead us in all things..
Our attitudes, the presence of pride, our unbridled tongue and eyes, letting our oil run out, our time that is not under the Holy Spirit’s leadership, all these things count. The Holy Spirit keeps taking us to new levels of holiness. If we reject the levels, we reject Him. The Lord says, “ I have turned the light up. There is a new measure. There is a new level that I am asking of you but there will be a new release of My presence on your heart when you walk in that level.” There is a new grace for all I call you to, I will help you. James 4:8, “Draw near to the Lord but cleanse your hands”—that means activities. “Purify your hearts”—that is attitudes. Our time is not our own. It belongs to the Lord, He says to us, I am yours and you are Mine.
