I. THE NATURE OF THE LATTER DAYS – 1 TIM. 4:1-3; 2 TIM. 3:1 – 4:5
Now the Spirit expressly says that in the later times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons, speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscience seared with a hot iron, forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from foods which God created to be received with thanksgiving y those who believe and know the truth. (1 Tim. 4:1-3)
A. 1 Timothy 4 – internal state of those who will walk away from Jesus:
- In this passage Paul gives, through the “explicit” (or distinct, clear) revelation of the Holy Spirit, the clearest statement regarding a coming end-time apostasy by which “some will depart from the faith. The Spirit of God makes this point “expressly”, or clearly – that believers will lose their salvation when they give heed (fully believe) deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons.
- Many in the church today fear succumbing to “false doctrine”, thus falling into a deception that will rob them of their destiny in God – this is not what this passage is speaking of. The idea that the Spirit wants to explicitly communicate is that believers will willingly give themselves wholeheartedly to demonic deception to the extent that their consciences become “seared (cauterized) with a hot iron”.
