The End-Time War on the Spirit of Jezebel

  1. Often when a woman in church has a leadership gift or a control spirit, people oppose her saying she has a “Jezebel Spirit.”  I do not believe that is what a Jezebel Spirit is.  We must let the Bible define our terminology.  There are two different women in the Bible named Jezebel. The first one was in the OT in context of Elijah (approx. 850 BC; 1 Kg. 16-21; 2 Kgs. 9) and the other is the NT in context to the church of Thyatira (Rev. 2:18-29).
  2. I am convinced that we gain insight into the End-Time drama by understanding the intensity of “OT Jezebel’s” persecution of Elijah and the prophets of Israel and the nature of “NT Jezebel’s” seduction of the church in Thyatira. The spiritual principles seen in “both Jezebels” will be fully manifest in the End-Times. Both contribute to understanding of “End-Time Jezebel’s” persecution (murder and theft) and seduction (immorality and sorcery) as a face of the spirit of Babylon.
  3. The four primary spiritual strongholds across the earth in the End-Times are murder, sorcery, immorality and theft (Rev. 9:21). Immorality stimulates the physical body outside of God’s will as sorcery stimulates the spirit. Sorcery often works in context to mind altering substances (drugs, alcohol. etc).

21 They did not repent of their murders or sorceries or sexual immorality or thefts. (Rev. 9:21)

  4. There is a progression in Satan’s End-Time strategy. First, he uses immorality to dull the spirit and harden the conscience. This opens the way for people to embrace sorcery which emboldens murder and theft as will be seen in persecution of the Church and Israel.

1 The Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons, 2…having their conscience seared… (1 Tim. 4:1-2)

  5. Immorality dulls the spirit which causes the Church to stop reaching to operate in the power of God. It causes guilt which produces hopelessness so people quit pursuing the deep things of God.
  6. The church of Thyatira is affirmed for growing in their ministries, endurance in persecution and love. Yet, they lacked zeal to confront believers engaged in Jezebel’s immorality and idolatry.

18 These things says the Son of God, who has eyes like a flame of fire, and His feet like fine brass: 19 I know your works, love, service, faith, and your patience; and as for your works, the last are more than the first. 20 Nevertheless I have a few things against you, because you allow (tolerate) that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess, to teach and seduce My servants to commit sexual immorality and eat things sacrificed to idols…22 Indeed I will cast her into a sickbed, and those who commit adultery with her into great tribulation, unless they repent of their deeds. 23 I will kill her children with death …. (Rev. 2:19-23)

  7. Those who sacrificed to idols did it to gain the power of demons and to interact with them.

18 Are not those who eat of the sacrifices partakers of the altar? 19 What am I saying then? That an idol is anything, or what is offered to idols is anything? 20 Rather, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice they sacrifice to demons and not to God, and I do not want you to have fellowship with demons. 21 You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons; you cannot partake of the Lord’s table and of the table of demons. (1 Cor. 10:18-21)

  1. Jezebel was a queen of Israel and a witch or priestess of the Baal and Asherah (Phoenician gods) who seduced Israel into immorality, idolatry (witchcraft or sorcery) and murder.
  2. She was raised in Sidon, a prosperous seaport city of Phoenicia on the Mediterranean Sea about 20 miles north of Tyre. As a foreign princess, her father Ethbaal, king of Sidon (in Tyre) gave her in marriage to Ahab to create an alliance with Sidon and Israel (about 870 BC).
  3. As the new queen of Israel, she moved to Jezreel and established a center of Baal worship there.

31 He (Ahab)…took as wife Jezebel the daughter of Ethbaal, king of the Sidonians; and he went and served Baal and worshiped him. (1 Kgs. 16:31-32)

  4. Jezebel had influence through her position as queen and her strong personality. She promoted immorality and sorcery throughout Israel and stirred Ahab up to do great wickedness.

25 But there was no one like Ahab who sold himself to do wickedness in the sight of the LORD, because Jezebel his wife stirred him up. (1 Kgs. 21:25)

  5. Jezebel’s position of influence was in being the queen. However, the passion of her heart was to operate in the occult realm of the spirit. She joined occult religion with the State government resulting in a “demonic theocracy” that will also be seen in the Antichrist’s empire.

22 The harlotries of your mother Jezebel and her witchcraft… (2 Kgs. 9:22)

  6. She used the powers of the state to established Phoenician idol worship on a grand scale in the king’s court in Jezreel. She financed 450 prophets of Baal and 400 of Asherah with state money.

    19 450 prophets of Baal, and 400 prophets of Asherah…eat at Jezebel’s table. (1 Kgs. 18:19)

  7. The conflict at the end-of-the-age will be between two Houses of Prayer (two global worship movements). The Antichrist will raise up a state-financed false worship worldwide movement (Rev. 13:4, 8, 12, 15). The Holy Spirit is raising up the most powerful worship movement in history (Rev. 22:17; 5:8; 8:4; Lk. 18:7-8; Isa. 62:6-7; 24:14-16; 26:8-9; 30:18-19; 42:10-13; etc.). He will finance it. This will be the most power, passionate and dangerous time in world history.

8 All who dwell on the earth will worship him (Antichrist), whose names have not been written in the Book of Life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world. (Rev. 13:8)

  8. The False Prophet will function as a “Jezebel like partner” to the Antichrist in his global empire.
  9. Ahab and Jezebel named their three children after the Lord (Ahaziah, Jehoram, Athaliah). Ahab consulted the prophets of Israel (1 Kings 22:6). They embraced the “respectability of religion”.

A. Jezebel murdered and hunted down God’s prophets who opposed her. Some End-Time saints will lose their life even as John the Baptist did for confronting the spirit of Jezebel.

7 I may avenge the blood of My servants the prophets…at the hand of Jezebel. (2 Kgs. 9:7)

  1. Jezebel hunted for the prophets to destroy them. They hid in caves from. Spiritually, when God’s people yield Jezebel’s immorality, they retreat in shame and spiritual dullness to “hide in cave.”

4 Jezebel massacred the prophets…Obadiah had taken 100 prophets and hidden them, fifty to a cave…10 There is no nation…(Ahab) has not sent…to hunt for you (Elijah)… (1 Kgs. 18:4, 10)

  2. Ahab, as the head of State engaged in a “propaganda” war that blamed Elijah as the one who troubled Israel because he prayed to release a national judgment of drought that lasted for 31⁄2 years due. Elijah put the responsibility on him. After Israel repented he prayed to release rain.

17 It happened, when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said to him, “Is that you, O troubler of Israel?” 18 And he answered, “I have not troubled Israel, but you and your father’s house have, in that you have forsaken the commandments of the LORD…” (1 Kgs. 18:17-18)

17 Elijah…prayed earnestly that it would not rain; and it did not rain on the land for three years and six months. 18 And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain…. (Jas 5:17-18)

  3. Elijah called for a showdown between the “prayer movement” of Baal’s prophets and the Lord.

19 Gather all Israel to me on Mount Carmel, the 450 prophets of Baal, and the 400 prophets of Asherah…21 Elijah came to all the people, and said, “How long will you falter between two opinions? If the LORD is God, follow Him; but if Baal, follow him.” …22 Elijah said to the people…23 Let them give us two bulls… 24 You call on the name of your gods, and I will call on the name of the LORD; and the God who answers by fire, He is God.”…26 So they…called on the name of Baal…36 Elijah…said, O LORD, hear me, that this people may know that You are the LORD God, and that You have turned their hearts back to You again.” 38 Then the fire of the LORD fell…39 When all the people saw it, they fell on their faces; and they said, “The LORD, He is God!”…40 Elijah said, “Seize the prophets of Baal! Do not let one of them escape!” …Elijah…executed them there…42 Elijah went up to the top of Carmel; he bowed down…45 There was a heavy rain. (1 Kgs. 18:19-45)

13 When I shut up heaven and there is no rain…or send pestilence among My people, 14 if My people called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven…and heal their land…. (2 Chr. 7:13-14)

  4. Elijah was raised up like John the Baptist to turn Israel back to God. Both Elijah and John the Baptist fulfilled God’s purpose in only turning a small number of people back to God.

15 For he will be great in the sight of the Lord…16 And he will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God. 17 He will also go before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, ‘to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children,’ and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.” (Lk. 1:15-17)

  1. Elijah killed all of Jezebel’s 850 prophets at Mt. Carmel with his sword. (1 Kgs. 18:40; 19:1). As God granted a great victorious through Elijah so also the End-Time will see great victories by releasing Jesus’ judgments through the sword of the Spirit (Eph. 6:17)

6 Let the high praises of God be in their mouth, and a two-edged sword in their hand, 7 to execute vengeance on the nations, and punishments on the peoples…9 to execute on them the written judgment– This honor have all His saints. (Ps. 149:6-9)

  2. After Elijah killed Jezebel’s prophets at Mt. Carmel, she swore an oath to her gods (demons) to kill Elijah. He was intimidated by this and ran for his life to Beersheba of Judah (1 Kgs. 19:1-3).

1 Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, also how he had executed all the prophets with the sword. 2 Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, “So let the gods do to me, and more also, if I do not make your life as the life of one of them by tomorrow…” 3 When he saw that, he arose and ran for his life, and went to Beersheba… (1 Kgs. 19:1-3)

    17 Elijah was a man with a nature like ours… (Jas 5:17)

  3. The contest between Elijah and Jezebel will be replayed yet with a higher measure of power.

13 He (False Prophet) performs great signs, so that he even makes fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men. (Rev. 13:13)

5 If anyone wants to harm them (Two Witnesses), fire proceeds from their mouth and devours their enemies. (Rev. 11:5)

  4. Jezebel’s theft is seen when Naboth refused to sell his vineyard to Ahab. Jezebel murdered him to take his property (1 Kgs. 21:1-16). She wrote a letter to the elders of Jezreel bribing them to have Naboth killed for blasphemy against God. She provided the initiative to do this evil.
  5. Jezebel lived 14 years after Ahab’s death as the queen-mother and continued to rule in Israel through her two sons (King Ahaziah and King Joram) and to promote evil through her daughter who was married to the King Jehoram of Judah (2 Chron 21:6). Jezebel’s daughter Athaliah married Judah’s King Jehoram, (Jehoshaphat’s son). She had the same spirit of wickedness as her mother (2 Kgs 11). Thus Jezebel also seduced Judah with her evil.
  6. Elijah prophesied that Ahab and Jezebel’s children would be killed by God’s judgment

20 Because you have sold yourself to do evil…21 Behold, I will bring calamity on you. I will take away your posterity, and will cut off from Ahab every male in Israel…23 and concerning Jezebel…the dogs shall eat Jezebel by the wall of Jezreel. (1 Kgs 21:20-23)

22 I will cast her (Jezebel) into a sickbed, and those who commit adultery with her into great tribulation, unless they repent of their deeds. 23 I will kill her children… (Rev. 2:22-23)

L. Jezebel’s two sons were killed. Jezebel’s oldest son, King Ahaziah, died, after a short reign in the complication incurred from an accident (2 Kings 1). Jezebel’s only other son King Jehoram died after reigning 12 years (2 Kings 9:24).

  1. Jehu an officer in the body-guard of Ahab, killed Jezebel for her harlotries and witchcraft. Jezebel was thrown from her palace window by the eunuch officials of the royal harem in Jezreel and eaten by dogs in fulfillment of Elijah’s prophecy (1 Kgs. 21:19-24).

32 He (Jehu) looked up at the window (where Jezebel was standing), and said, “Who is on my side? Who?” So two or three eunuchs looked out at him. 33 He said, “Throw her down.” So they threw her down…and he trampled her underfoot…35 They went to bury her, but they found no more of her than the skull and the feet and the palms of her hands. 36 They came back and told him. He said, “This is the word of the LORD…by His servant Elijah…saying, ‘On the plot of ground at Jezreel dogs shall eat the flesh of Jezebel’. (2 Kings 9:31-36)

  2. Summary: The OT Jezebel promoted sexual immorality and idolatry and murdered the prophets and the people (2 Kgs. 9:7), and stole some of the property of those she killed.

  1. The NT Jezebel acted like the Jezebel in the OT and therefore, may have deliberately taken this name in her brazen boldness to show her confidence in endorsing sin.
  2. The spirit of Jezebel against the spirit of Elijah is a war of two prayer movements.
  3. The spirit of Jezebel is the operation of immorality and sorcery (witchcraft) for the purpose of stopping people from worshipping Jesus and partnering with Him in the prophetic (power). The NT Jezebel killed the prophets spiritually by seducing them to immorality. Today, the spirit of Jezebel with its immorality (pornography, adultery, etc.) kills the prophetic spirit.
  4. Today the introduction to the spirit of Jezebel is it most clearly seen as the spirit that operates behind pornography. Men are most responsible for producing, promoting and partaking of it. NT Jezebel taught “liberty in grace” in context to attending idol feasts which involved immorality. Immorality is at the top of almost every list of sins in the NT and it is emphasized in the Book of Revelation as one of Satan’s primary weapons against the Church in the End-Times (Rev. 9:21; 14:8; 17:1-4; 18:2-4, 9-10; 19:2; 21:8).
  5. The spirit of Jezebel will escalate to wholesale murder of Christians and Jews (Dan. 7:21, 25; 8:24; 11:33-35; 12:7, 10; Rev. 6:9-11; 7:9, 14; 9:21; 11:7; 13:7, 15; 16:5-7; 17:6; 18:24; 19:2; Mt. 10:21-22, 28; 24:9; Lk. 12:4-7; 21:16-19; Jn. 15:18- 16:4). The OT Jezebel hated Elijah and killed the prophets. Herod and Herodias operating in the spirit of Jezebel killed John the Baptist who operated in the spirit of Elijah.
  1. The two faces of the spirit of Antichrist emphasized in the Book of Revelation are the spirit of Babylon and the spirit of Jezebel. The multitudes in heaven rejoice at the fall of Babylon.

2 True and righteous are His judgments, because He judged the great harlot who corrupted the earth with her fornication…and avenged on her the blood of His servants . (Rev. 19:2)

  2. This emphasizes aspects of revelation of Jesus that are necessary to gain victory over Jezebel.

18 The Son of God, who has eyes like a flame of fire, and His feet like fine brass… (Rev. 2:18)

    1. Son of God – emphasizes Jesus’ deity and power to withstand Jezebel. Jesus is the all powerful Lord God of Elijah who will “personally come from heaven in fire” to end the great context to end the Armageddon campaign.

7 Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, 8 in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God… (2 Thes. 1:7-8)

    2. Who has eyes like a flame of fire – in Scripture, fire symbolizes both the impartation of holy love and the release of judgment. He releases either the “fire of grace” or the “fire of judgment” depending on if we open to Him or resist Him. In context to our war against the spirit of Jezebel, Jesus will impart passion (Lk. 24:32; Acts 2:1-4) which includes convicting us of compromise or He will release judgment on immorality.
    3. His feet are like fine brass – in Scripture, brass is a symbol of judgment against sin. Jesus’ feet of bronze speak of His promise as a warrior to tread in triumph over Jezebel. This revelation of Jesus gives us confidence what we will win the battle against Jezebel. The Antichrist and his armies will be thrown down by the Jesus’ End-Time judgments.

33 They threw her (Jezebel) down and he (Jehu) trampled her underfoot…(2 Kgs 9:33)

  3. Jesus warned the saints in Thyatira of coming under judgment.

20 I have a few things against you, because you allow (tolerate)…Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess, to teach and seduce My servants to commit sexual immorality and eat things sacrificed to idols…22 Indeed I will cast her into a sickbed, and those who commit adultery with her into great tribulation, unless they repent. 23 I will kill her children… (Rev. 2:20-23)

  4. We cannot allow the status quo to go unchallenged as long as immorality and witchcraft abound.

22 Joram (Jezebel’s son) saw Jehu…he said, “Is it peace Jehu?” He answered, “What peace, as long as the harlotries of your mother Jezebel and her witchcraft are so many?” (2 Kgs. 9:22)

  5. The option to reverse God’s judgment remains open to any who repent. Repentance can dramatically change the circumstances in our lives. This was one of the great revelations that David had. Repentance causes to join God’s side and positions us to receive His mercy.
  6. Jezebel was a leader in the church with a reputation of consistent “accurate prophetic revelation”.

L. Believers are sometimes made sick and killed in context to God’s judgment on immorality. Jesus does this in His zeal to heal them before they face Him in eternity (1 Cor. 5:1-5; 11:30-32). The judgment of being cast into tribulation has a parallel reference to believers being judged with unbelievers for indulging in immorality during the Tribulation in the End-Times (Rev 7:14).

  1. The promised reward in this age to the faithful refers to Jesus releasing more of His presence and giving more prophetic light as the darkness of the Tribulation increases and the new Millennial day draws nearer and nearer. The promised reward in the age to come refers to Jesus releasing more of His presence and giving the faithful authority in ruling the nations in the Millennium.

26 And he who overcomes, and keeps My works until the end, to him I will give power over the nations …28 and I will give him the morning star. (Rev. 2:26-28)

  2. The Morning Star is a reference to Jesus. A deep relationship with Jesus is promised here. This revelation of Jesus, His Word and authority. The morning star is the brightest star in the sky (planet Venus) seen just before the dawning of a new day.

16 I, Jesus…am the Bright and Morning Star. (Rev 22:16)

  3. Jesus’ as the Morning Star is an expression His face being like the sun

16 His countenance was like the sun shining in its strength. (Rev. 1:6)

24 The Lord bless you and keep you; 25 the Lord make His face shine upon you… 26 the Lord lift up His countenance upon you, and give you peace. (Num. 6:24-26)

  4. Receiving the morning star refers to receiving greater understanding of prophetic Scriptures.

19 We have the prophetic word confirmed, which you do well to heed as a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts… (2 Pet. 1:19)

  5. The promised reward in the age to come refers to Jesus releasing more of His presence and giving the faithful more authority to partner with Him in ruling the nations in the Millennial Kingdom. Jesus will shine and make our spirit bright with His brightness

3 Those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the firmament, and those who turn many to righteousness like the stars forever and ever. (Dan. 12:3)

43 Then the righteous will shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. (Mt. 13:43)
